Disaster Information

The U.S. Geological Survey predicts a catastrophic earthquake California with the next three decades. The expected quake would somewhere in be on the scale of the1906 earthquake that destroyed San Francisco. To put it another way, the quake would be 100 times more powerful than the 1994 Northridge earthquake, which has already cost more than $25 billion.

Earthquakes and other natural disaster are a growing problem for victims and taxpayers who face the burden of paying for relief, regardless of where they live.

The Independent Insurance Agents of America (IIAA) has assembled this special Natural Disaster section to provide consumers and insurance agents with disaster tips and information about the efforts of the Natural Disaster Coalition (NDC) to push forward the National Disaster Protection Act.

The NDC is a task force of lenders, insurers, state and local emergency managers, firefighters and homeowners groups dedicated to reducing property losses and injuries from natural disasters.

Natural Disaster Coalition and the National Disaster Protection Act

Congress is considering important legislation to reform federal disaster policies. The Natural Disaster Protection Act (H.R. 1856, S. 1043) would:

  • Lower the share of disaster costs paid by private insurance.
  • Condition future disaster relief on the purchase of private insurance.
  • Create a nationwide, privately funded catastrophic insurance pool to spread risk and prevent economic disruption after mega-disasters.
  • Provide privately funded grants to communities to help them reduce their exposures and plan better for events that do occur.
  • Provide additional funds for training of emergency personnel.
